Usage Tips That Apply Across Materials

Regardless of material or instrument type, these fundamental technique principles will maximize performance and instrument life.

  • Use appropriate RPM. Most Wagner Precision instruments are optimized for 25,000–35,000 RPM for ceramic and zirconia. Refer to individual product sheets for material-specific speed recommendations.
  • Apply light, consistent pressure. Excessive pressure generates heat, accelerates wear, and risks micro-fracture in ceramic materials. Let the abrasive do the work.
  • Use coolant or air when indicated. Sintered zirconia and lithium disilicate benefit from air or water cooling. The Diacool Ice system is specifically engineered for coolant-assisted cutting.
  • Follow the grit sequence. Moving through coarse, medium, fine, and extra-fine stages in order removes previous scratch depth systematically. Skipping steps extends total finishing time rather than shortening it.
  • Clean instruments between uses. Use a soft brush or ultrasonic cleaning to remove debris between cases. Loaded instruments cut less efficiently and generate more heat.
  • Keep instruments moving. Stationary contact concentrates heat. A gentle circular or figure-eight motion distributes load and improves surface uniformity.
  • Inspect before each use. Worn abrasive elements or damaged shanks should be replaced. A degraded instrument creates an unpredictable cutting surface.
  • Match instrument to substrate hardness. Coarser grits for harder, more resistant materials; finer grits for softer ceramics and esthetically critical surfaces.
