Zirconia & Lithium Disilicate in Modern Dentistry

Zirconia and lithium disilicate have become the dominant restorative ceramics in both clinical and laboratory settings. Their exceptional strength, biocompatibility, and esthetic potential make them the materials of choice for single units, bridges, and implant restorations — but their hardness demands instruments engineered specifically for the task.

Zirconia

Available in green (pre-sintered) and fully sintered states. Green state zirconia is porous and workable; fully sintered zirconia reaches ~1,200 HV hardness and requires diamond instruments to shape and finish effectively.

  • 3Y, 4Y, 5Y translucency options available
  • Mono-layer and multi-layer gradient blanks
  • Adjustable in green state before firing
  • Requires dedicated diamond instruments after sintering

Lithium Disilicate

Available in a machinable intermediate crystalline state (IPS e.max CAD, blue block) and fully crystallized state. Both require careful instrument selection to avoid sub-surface cracking, which is not visible until the restoration fails clinically.

  • Superior translucency and esthetic integration
  • Ideal for anterior and posterior single units
  • Brittle at high speeds without proper coolant
  • Requires progressively finer diamonds to prevent surface defects
